The Process

First the auditioner must learn the classic swing line-dance known as "The Shim Sham." The dance is comprised of a series of solo jazz steps, including the break, the half-break, and tacky annies. A member of the troupe will teach the number to all the auditioners for about thirty minutes. Then auditioners will be asked to perform the number twice while members of the troupe watch and take notes. This part of the audition process assesses the auditioner's ability to quickly learn choreography, as well as showing off the auditioner's natural body movement and rhythm.

In the second part of the audition, the auditioner will learn East-coast swing dancing. A couple from the troupe will teach a few steps, including an East-coast basic and a tuck turn, while auditioners dance with members of the troupe and other auditioners. After the short lesson, auditioners will be asked to rotate through members of the group who will assess the auditioners' skills. This part of the audition process assesses the auditioner's partnering skills, esecially frame and connection.
